June 6 was the 62nd anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy during World War II. And, as often happens on important anniversaries, we heard from a few readers upset because there wasn’t a story or photograph marking it in that day’s paper.

Each year we try to do significant coverage of Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day, as we did recently. The anniversaries of D-Day and Pearl Harbor Day are a little harder, because there’s often little happening leading up to the event. There are ceremonies on the anniversary day, of course, and we always try to include coverage of those in the next day’s paper, as we did today with this photo from Normandy, which was the centerpiece on the Nation & World page. It’s one of those situations that highlights the overnight delay required in producing the printed paper — and it makes us glad we now have the kentucky.com website for breaking news.
While anniversaries such as D-Day and Pearl Harbor Day rarely involve "news," they’re important milestones in our nation’s history. We try to make note of them as a way of reminding readers of the sacrifices made by our Veterans.
